Living with Braces: Tips for Orthodontic Patients
By Dr. P Meghana · Orthodontics
Getting Started with Braces
Getting braces is a significant step toward a healthier, straighter smile, but it also comes with new responsibilities. Whether you have traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, or clear aligners, taking proper care of your teeth and orthodontic appliances is essential for achieving the best results in the shortest time.
The first few days after getting braces can involve some discomfort as your teeth begin to shift. This is completely normal and usually subsides within a week. Understanding what to expect and how to manage the adjustment period will make your orthodontic journey much smoother.
Oral Hygiene with Braces
Keeping your teeth clean with braces requires extra time and effort. Brackets and wires create many small spaces where food and plaque can accumulate, increasing the risk of cavities, staining, and gum disease if you do not clean thoroughly.
- •Brush after every meal and snack, not just twice a day
- •Use a soft-bristled brush and angle it toward the gum line and around each bracket
- •Consider an interdental brush or proxy brush to clean around wires and brackets
- •Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to thread floss under the archwire
- •A water flosser is an excellent supplementary tool for removing debris around braces
- •Use a fluoride mouthwash daily to strengthen enamel in hard-to-reach areas
Poor oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment can result in permanent white spots or stains on your teeth when the braces are removed. Prevention is key.
Foods to Avoid with Braces
Certain foods can damage your braces by bending wires, loosening brackets, or getting stuck in hard-to-clean areas. Avoiding these foods will prevent unexpected orthodontic emergencies and keep your treatment on track.
- •Hard foods: ice, hard candies, nuts, popcorn kernels, raw carrots (cut into small pieces instead)
- •Sticky foods: caramel, toffee, chewing gum, gummy candies, taffy
- •Crunchy foods: chips, pretzels, hard breadsticks, whole apples (slice them first)
- •Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, beef jerky, licorice
- •Foods you bite into directly: corn on the cob (cut it off), whole apples, ribs
A broken bracket or wire can extend your treatment time. If something does break, contact The Tooth Stop promptly to schedule a repair appointment.
Managing Discomfort
Some soreness is expected after your braces are first placed and following each adjustment appointment. The discomfort typically peaks on the second or third day and gradually fades over the following week.
- •Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed if needed
- •Eat soft foods for the first few days: yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, soup, scrambled eggs, pasta
- •Apply orthodontic wax over any brackets or wires that irritate your cheeks or lips
- •Rinse with warm salt water to soothe irritated oral tissues
- •Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling
- •Avoid hard or crunchy foods until the soreness subsides
Orthodontic wax is your best friend during the adjustment period. Pinch off a small piece, roll it into a ball, and press it over any bracket or wire that is causing irritation.
Staying on Track with Your Treatment
Orthodontic treatment is a partnership between you and your dental team. The length and success of your treatment depends significantly on how well you follow instructions and care for your braces.
- •Attend all scheduled adjustment appointments to keep your treatment on schedule
- •Wear rubber bands, headgear, or other appliances exactly as instructed by your orthodontist
- •If you have clear aligners, wear them for the recommended 20 to 22 hours per day
- •Report any broken brackets, loose wires, or unusual discomfort promptly
- •After your braces are removed, wear your retainer as directed to prevent teeth from shifting back
Remember that the temporary inconvenience of braces is an investment in a lifetime of straight teeth and a confident smile. If you have any questions or concerns during your treatment, our team at The Tooth Stop is always here to help.
