After Getting Dentures: Adjustment & Care

Share

The First Few Days: What to Expect

New dentures always feel different at first. Your mouth needs time to adapt to the new appliance — this is completely normal and temporary.

  • Soreness and minor irritation on your gums is expected in the first 1–2 weeks. Your gum tissue is adapting to the pressure of the denture.
  • Increased saliva production is normal in the first few days and will settle down as your mouth adjusts.
  • Difficulty speaking clearly (especially 's' and 'f' sounds) is temporary. Practice reading aloud to speed up adaptation.
  • A feeling of fullness or bulk in the mouth will decrease as you get used to wearing the denture.
  • Attend your scheduled follow-up appointments — adjustments are almost always needed in the first few weeks.

Eating with New Dentures

Start with soft foods and gradually work your way up to a normal diet as your confidence grows.

  • Begin with soft foods cut into small pieces — khichdi, dal, mashed vegetables, curd rice, idli, soft fruits.
  • Chew on both sides simultaneously to keep the denture balanced and prevent it from tipping.
  • Avoid very hard foods (raw carrots, hard biscuits, nuts) in the first weeks.
  • Avoid sticky foods like chewing gum, toffees, or very chewy breads that can dislodge the denture.
  • Cut meat and fibrous foods into small pieces rather than biting directly with your front teeth.

Cleaning Your Dentures

Good denture hygiene prevents bad odour, staining, and gum disease.

  • Remove and rinse dentures after every meal to remove loose food particles.
  • Brush dentures daily with a soft-bristled denture brush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser — never regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive.
  • Soak overnight in a denture-cleaning solution or plain cold water. This keeps the material from drying out and warping.
  • Never use hot or boiling water — heat can warp the denture material permanently.
  • Clean your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft toothbrush every morning before inserting the denture.

Wearing Schedule

  • Wear your dentures as much as possible during the day to help your mouth adapt quickly.
  • Remove at night to give your gum tissue a rest — this reduces irritation and helps maintain healthy gum circulation.
  • If you experience soreness, do not stop wearing the denture entirely — instead, contact us so we can adjust the fit.
  • Never attempt to adjust or bend the denture yourself — this can cause irreparable damage.

When to Contact Us

  • Persistent sore spots or ulcers that do not improve within a week.
  • Denture feels loose or moves when you eat or speak — relines or adjustments may be needed.
  • Cracked, chipped, or broken denture — bring it in immediately; do not try to repair it with household glue.
  • Significant changes in fit — your jawbone naturally changes shape over time and the denture may need relining.
  • Difficulty chewing that does not improve after 2–3 weeks of adjustment.
