After Tooth Extraction: Care Instructions
First 24 Hours: Critical Care
The first 24 hours after extraction are the most important for healing. A blood clot needs to form in the socket to protect the bone and nerves underneath.
- •Bite firmly on the gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the procedure. Replace with a fresh pad if bleeding continues.
- •Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours — this can dislodge the blood clot and cause a painful dry socket.
- •Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling.
- •Keep your head elevated while resting — use an extra pillow when sleeping.
- •Do not smoke or consume tobacco for at least 48-72 hours.
Pain Management
Some discomfort is normal after an extraction. Follow these guidelines to stay comfortable.
- •Take prescribed painkillers as directed by your dentist — do not wait for the pain to become severe.
- •Ibuprofen (if not contraindicated) can help with both pain and swelling.
- •Avoid aspirin, as it can increase bleeding.
- •Pain should gradually decrease over 2-3 days. If it worsens after day 3, contact us.
Eating & Drinking
- •Stick to soft, cool foods for the first 2 days — yoghurt, mashed potatoes, khichdi, dal, smoothies.
- •Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods until the area has healed.
- •Chew on the opposite side of the extraction site.
- •Stay well hydrated but avoid carbonated drinks for 24 hours.
Oral Hygiene After Extraction
- •Do not brush the extraction site for the first 24 hours.
- •After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water (half teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water) 3-4 times a day, especially after meals.
- •Resume gentle brushing of other teeth, being careful around the extraction area.
- •Continue salt water rinses for 5-7 days.
What to Watch For
While some bleeding, swelling, and discomfort are normal, certain symptoms need immediate attention.
- •Dry socket — intense throbbing pain starting 2-3 days after extraction, often with a bad taste.
- •Excessive bleeding that doesn't slow down after 2-3 hours of firm gauze pressure.
- •Fever above 100.4°F (38°C) lasting more than 24 hours.
- •Numbness that persists beyond 6-8 hours after the procedure.
