After Dental Implant Surgery: Recovery Guide

Share

First 24-48 Hours: Critical Healing Period

Dental implant surgery is a precise procedure, and proper aftercare is essential for the implant to integrate successfully with your jawbone. Take it easy for the first couple of days.

  • Bite on gauze for 30-60 minutes after surgery to control bleeding. Light oozing for 24 hours is normal.
  • Apply ice packs to your face (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first 48 hours to reduce swelling.
  • Do not disturb the surgical site — avoid touching, poking, or prodding with your tongue or fingers.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity for 48-72 hours. Keep your head elevated while sleeping.
  • Do not spit, use a straw, or rinse vigorously for the first 24 hours.
  • Do not smoke — smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure.

Pain & Swelling Management

  • Swelling peaks on day 2-3 and gradually reduces over a week — this is completely normal.
  • Take prescribed antibiotics and painkillers exactly as directed. Complete the full antibiotic course.
  • Ibuprofen is effective for both pain and swelling (if not contraindicated for you).
  • Some bruising on the face or jaw may appear — it will resolve within 7-10 days.
  • If swelling worsens after day 3 or is accompanied by fever, contact us.

Diet & Oral Hygiene

  • Eat only soft, cool foods for the first week — smoothies, yoghurt, mashed vegetables, soups (not hot), scrambled eggs.
  • Do not chew near the implant site for the recommended healing period.
  • After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water 3-4 times daily.
  • Brush other teeth normally but avoid the surgical site for the first week. Use a prescribed mouthwash instead.
  • Stay hydrated and maintain good nutrition to support healing.

Long-Term Healing & Follow-Ups

Implant integration (osseointegration) takes 3-6 months. During this time, the implant fuses with your jawbone.

  • Attend all follow-up appointments — your dentist needs to monitor healing and integration.
  • Do not apply pressure on the implant site until your dentist confirms it is safe.
  • Once healed, treat your implant like a natural tooth — brush, floss, and get regular cleanings.
  • Implants can last a lifetime with proper care.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Implant feels loose or mobile at any point after surgery.
  • Persistent pain that worsens after the first week instead of improving.
  • Pus or foul-smelling discharge from the surgical site.
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C) that lasts more than 24 hours.
  • Numbness or tingling in your lip, chin, or tongue that persists beyond 24 hours.
