After Teeth Whitening: Protect Your Results
The First 48 Hours Are Crucial
Your teeth are most vulnerable to staining in the first 48 hours after whitening. The pores in your enamel are still open and will absorb colour easily. Follow these guidelines carefully to protect your results.
- •Follow the "white diet" rule — if it would stain a white shirt, do not eat or drink it.
- •Avoid tea, coffee, red wine, cola, tomato sauce, soy sauce, berries, and turmeric.
- •Do not smoke or use any tobacco products — this will immediately stain your teeth.
- •Avoid coloured mouthwash (blue, green, or purple) — use clear mouthwash only.
- •Drink staining beverages through a straw if absolutely necessary (after 48 hours).
Managing Sensitivity
Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect of whitening and is not a cause for concern.
- •Sensitivity to hot and cold is normal and typically lasts 24-72 hours.
- •Use a sensitivity toothpaste (like Sensodyne) for a few days before and after treatment.
- •Avoid very hot or very cold foods and drinks during the sensitivity period.
- •If sensitivity is bothersome, take ibuprofen or paracetamol as needed.
Maintaining Your Brighter Smile
- •Brush twice daily with a whitening or fluoride toothpaste.
- •Rinse your mouth with water immediately after consuming staining foods or drinks.
- •Drink coffee and tea with a splash of milk to reduce staining potential.
- •Schedule professional cleaning every 6 months to remove surface stains.
- •Consider touch-up whitening every 6-12 months as recommended by your dentist.
- •Quit or reduce smoking — tobacco is the number one cause of tooth discolouration.
What Is Normal & What Is Not
- •Normal: Mild sensitivity, slight gum irritation, white spots on teeth (these even out in 24 hours).
- •Not normal: Severe pain, blistering of gums, or extreme prolonged sensitivity beyond 5 days.
